Boat Covers

By Elizabeth Morgan

You may take pride in your sailboat, sail down the waters to drown your worries, or, even share a special occasion with someone special, but you should also remember that the boat needs to be provided with a proper cover.

Covers add longevity to the life of the boat. Boats, like other living and non-living organisms, slowly but steadily face the vagaries of nature, be it water, rain, storm, mildew or corrosion. These problems can be controlled with proper maintenance. Most covers come with features such as dual air vents that help to remove moisture or prevent the ballooning of the covers in case of high winds. If your boat is fixed to trailer, then there are added facilities of quick release buckle and strap systems, which provide the required ideal fitting.

Some boat covers have full cuts which allow room for accessories like rails, lights etc. The fabric for the boat covers may vary. The fabric can range between rugged polyester or the sturdy canvas. The important thing associated with fabrics is that they need to be strong and flexible. This is because of the role, which the boat covers are meant to performprotect the boat when it faces, the forces of nature.

Another popular fabric is the waver polyester backed with non-waver polyester. Boat covers can be both customized and semi-customized. Customized boats have the advantage of giving your boat the perfect fit. This boat cover gives maximum protection to your boat because of the unique fit. Semi- customized boat covers, on the other hand are customized in the sense they are made as per specific styles of boats.

All said, boat covers have the ability to provide a waterproof barrier against water. Special features enable the moisture collected in the boat to evaporate out. They also provide resistance to ultraviolet damage. In this way they can increase the longevity of the boat.

If you want to run shallow rivers, you need a jet boat. Jet boats come in different types and sizes, but they all have one thing in common they depend on a high-pressure column of water pushed out of the engine to propel the boat. They can run in less water depth because there is no prop and lower unit hanging down to snag the river bottom. With the right boat, a highly skilled driver, and a consistent bottom, you can run in as little as two-to-three inches of water.

Jetboats were originally designed by Sir William Hamilton (who developed a waterjet in 1954) for operation in the fast-flowing and shallow rivers of New Zealand, specifically to overcome the problem of propellers striking rocks in such waters.

Cruising yachts are by the far the most common yacht in private use, making up most of the 25' to 45' (7 m to 14 m) range. These vessels can be quite complex in design, as they need a balance between docile handling qualities, interior space, good light-wind performance and on-board comfort. The huge range of such craft, from dozens of builders worldwide, makes it hard to give a single illustrative description. However, most favour a teardrop-planform hull, with a wide, flat bottom and deep single-fin keel to give good stability. Most are single-masted Bermuda rigged sloops, with a single fore-sail of the jib or Genoa type and a single mainsail. Spinnaker sails,in various sizes, are often supplied for down-wind use. These types are often chosen as family vessels, especially those in the 30- to 40-foot (8 to 12 m) range. Such a vessel will usually have many cabins below deck. Typically there will be three double-berth cabins; a single large saloon with galley, seating and navigation equipment; and a "head" consisting of a toilet and shower-room.

Boom Brakes & Preventers, Preventing Injuries.

Thu, 20 Dec 2007 16:32:21 +0200
Not wishing to pre-empt the findings of the investigation into the latest tragedy in the ARC rally. But taking a good hard look at preventing injuries from being hit specifically by booms:-

During racing, the controlled gybe manoeuver may be performed many times without the use of a boom preventer - this is understandable. However, when in a cruising mode and when setting a course for a distant destination, is there a good reason for not using a boom preventer, so that if an unplanned gybe occurs - possible injury is averted ????
