The Most Common Types Of Boat Lifts

There are many different types of boat lifts available on the market today. Some of these lifts can be purchased in 'do it yourself' kits others require professional installation. The choice of a boat lift primarily depends on the type of waterfront you live on, the amount of money you want to spend, the type of boat you have (aluminum vs. fiberglass) and the size of your boat. Boat lifts also can be installed with either manual winches (up to 2000lbs) or electrical winches (1000lbs and up).

Unless you have a very light aluminum boat, we highly recommend purchasing electrical motor(s) to doing the lifting of the boat. Not only is it an extremely easier way of lifting your boat out of the water, but also, you may upgrade down the road to a heavier fiberglass boat and it would one less replacement cost.

There are new types of boat lifts coming out every season, so for the purpose of this article, we will focus on the most effective and popular.

Davits:

Davits have been the most common type of boat lift for many, many years. Basically, they are two steel poles that are called �booms� that are installed either on the sea wall or on pilings. The booms are attached to a base that is bolted down to either the sea wall or the piling. Each boom swings 360 degrees so that should you purchase a bigger boat, most likely the booms can be swung out to still be able to attach to the boat. If not, extensions are available to upgrade, if needed. Each boom has a stainless steel cable (make sure it is stainless steel cable) that attaches to both the boat and the winch.

One boom cable attaches to the front cleat either under or on top of the bow of the boat and the other attaches to the rear. The vast majority of boats require a spreader bar to be attached to the boom pulling up the rear of the boat. The reason for this is twofold; there are two cleats on the rear of the boat to attach and the spreader bar keeps the boat even when lifting and when out of the water on the lift.

As far as whether to attach the davits to pilings or to the sea wall, there are different schools of thought on that. We recommend speaking to the installers about what they recommend, however, we have seen many a lift pull a piling right out of the water while the boat is being lifted. One other maintenance that must be performed yearly is the inspection of your cables. Again, we have seen many a boat lift cable snap and send one end of the boat crashing down into the water. We suggest replacement every four years or so, depending on usage and weather.

One davit alone can also be installed to use as a personal watercraft (Jet Ski) lift. The only additional equipment needed is a sling that attaches to the one boom cable. The sling is a polyester strap with two stainless steel panels that attach to either side of the Jet Ski to lift it out of the water. Again, an electrical or manual winch can be installed and the boom swings 360 degrees.

Final note: There are many different sizes of davits and booms that can be purchased depending on your boat specs.

Piling Mount Boat Lifts:

This type of boat lift attaches directly to piling which eliminates all support beams. This type of lift is great for sail boats and boats with towers. They also come in many types of capacities, depending on the weight of your boat.

Drive on Boat Lifts:

This type of boat lift is becoming more and more popular due to the maintenance free nature of the lift. The only determining factor is that you have to live on a waterway that always has water. For example, many types of canals, at low tide, do not have enough water in them to support this type of lift. They are considered very user-friendly, convenient and safe.

They can support ranges from a 12 foot dinghy to a 50 foot offshore boat. The boat lift is drive on and basically goes up and down with the tides. It attaches to the pilings on your dock making boarding and access easy. Its also modular and portable meaning if you move, you can take it with you.

Cradle Boat Lifts:

Currently there are 25 different types of cradle boat lifts available. They can be either steel, aluminum or a combination of both. They have capacities ranging from 4,500 to 30,000 pounds.

Marine Elevator Boat Lifts:

Marine elevator boat lifts are ideal for extreme tidal areas or other unusual docking conditions. The capacity of these lifts is from 2,000 to 14,000 pounds.

Be conscious on the rights of others�

Never let your jet ski becomes annoying to others. In other words: be mindful that there are other people who don�t want to be destructed by the sound or the wave your jet ski is making.

I'm looking to purchase my first sailboat and I am in need of some guidance. I was leaning towards a steel or aluminum hull but most do not have a swim step and walk through transom. It sounds kind of odd but the is a top criteria for me. Three reasons: it is easier to land big fish, it is easiers to board from a tender, and I have a dog who loves the water and if she jumps I need to get her back aboard somehow. Do you know of any steel hulled sloop or cutter rigs that have a walk through transom and a swim step?! I am looking at the 40'-45' range.

Most of today's modern inflatable boats easily match conventional runabouts for speed and handling, while some of the more sophisticated rigid-hulled inflatables are clearly superior to ordinary fiberglass or aluminum boats. For instance, the Virage range of sports boats features Zodiac's patented Futura speed tubes to produce amazing lift and stability. Because the Futura hull merely kisses the water, it creates less drag and thus requires less power to reach incredible speeds while performing with absolute safety. The big rigid-hulled inflatable superboats are equally impressive. With deep V-keels up forward and flat planing sections aft they can produce an astonishingly comfortable ride in tough offshore conditions, yet maneuver with ease in the tightest dock or harbor.

In a jetboat, the waterjet draws water from beneath the hull where it passes through a series of impellers and stators - known as stages - which increase the velocity of the waterflow. Most modern jets are single stage while older waterjets may have as many as three stages. The tail section of the waterjet unit extends out through the transom of the hull above the waterline. This jetstream exits the unit through a small nozzle at high velocity to push the boat forward. Steering is accomplished by moving this nozzle to either side, or less commonly, by small gates on either side that direct the jetstream. Because the jet boat relies on the flow of water through the nozzle for control, it is not possible to steer a conventional jet boat without the throttle open.

Used a similar tool many years ago - it was a very useful , especially when repairing a genoa on my sailing yacht where the clew's grommet/cringle had pulled out - this one looks similar. Seems expensive but I guess if it is strongly built it and because it might have an easy life, it should last the life of your boat. Over time it could turn out to save a lot of journeys to the sailmaker.

If you are thinking about purchasing a boat, congratulations! A boat, no matter the size, is a purchase that is bound to bring you plenty of good times. However, just like with any purchase, caution should be taken to ensure that you are getting a fair deal. Buying a boat is a lot like buying a car. You will need to consider whether you should purchase a new or used boat. You will need to find a reputable dealer or find someone who is selling their boat. You need to know what to look for to determine whether the boat you are buying is seaworthy.

The first step in buying a boat is determining exactly what type of boat you need. Where will you be using your boat? Are you planning to use it in the ocean, on a lake or in a river? How many people will use the boat at one time? Do you require a boat that has accommodations for sleeping? How much money have you set aside to purchase the boat?

Once you determine what type of boat you want, you can start comparing different available boats. Your first concern, of course, is the safety of the boat. Newer boats should have little safety concerns, but with used boats you will need to know what to look for. Ask whomever is selling the boat if the boat has ever been in any type of accident. Check to see if the paint is chipped or whether you can see spots where the paint color is not uniform. This might indicate an accident. Are their any rust lines or lines where you can tell that the boat was submerged in water? Does the deck of the boat feel sturdy or are there spots which feel soft? How does the inside of the boat smell? If you smell mildew or mold, this is not a good sign. Ask for the maintenance records for the boat. Some people are quite concerned about the appearance of a boat. Remember, a worn down appearance doesn't necessarily mean that the boat is in bad shape. If you are concerned about the appearance, make sure you do a complete check of the boat before agreeing to buy. If purchasing new, check to see what options and accessories are available at the time of purchase. You can often get a discount on these items if you purchase them with the boat.

Finally, make sure you know all the costs associated with your boat before you make it yours. Remember, the cost of the boat is just one thing you will be expected to pay. Boats need to be registered just like vehicles. If the boat will travel on a trailer, you will probably be expected to register this as well. You will have to pay taxes on the boat. Some other expenses include dock fees, the cost of routine maintenance or repairs, and the cost of your fuel or oil. If you will not be using the boat year round, you need to add in the cost of storing the boat during the winter months. As long as you do your homework before heading out to purchase your boat, you should be quite thrilled with boat ownership.

I was just reading the thread on sailing yacht propellers and was wondering if anybody has ever used their propeller to generate electricity while under sail. Seems like it would be easy enough... just install a gear on the shaft and connect it to some form of small turbine.... I would think this could be a pretty efficient way to charge batteries, etc., while under sail but I've never heard anyone comment on it.

Hello everyone! I am at a crossroads in my life and am excited for the next adventure. My plan is to purchase a sailboat with the proceeds from the sale of my business and live/cruise/relax/explore for 6 months of the year- every year! (if anyone has any recommendations for what I should buy - I'm all ears - I'm looking to spend around $200kusd and like the idea of a multi hull) I have limited sailing experience but am certified in advanced navigation standard and off shore cruising standard by CYA. Because of my limited on water experience I am looking for an experienced person to be the "captain" of the boat and teach me along the way! Hopefully the candidate will be easy to get a long with and will be able to stay with the boat long term. (I will need someone to sail/maintain her when I'm not there for 6 months of the year!) The crew will only be expected to contribute an equal share of the cost of food and drinks. All boat costs (fuel, fees, marinas, etc.,) will be covered by me!. Each person is to cover their own travel expenses to/from the boat and their costs of personal visas, etc.

In a jetboat, the waterjet draws water from beneath the hull where it passes through a series of impellers and stators - known as stages - which increase the velocity of the waterflow. Most modern jets are single stage while older waterjets may have as many as three stages. The tail section of the waterjet unit extends out through the transom of the hull above the waterline. This jetstream exits the unit through a small nozzle at high velocity to push the boat forward. Steering is accomplished by moving this nozzle to either side, or less commonly, by small gates on either side that direct the jetstream. Because the jet boat relies on the flow of water through the nozzle for control, it is not possible to steer a conventional jet boat without the throttle open.

The Oceanswatch web site was interesting to me, but I'm not familiar with many charitable organizations traveling on small private yachts, and so I wrote to Oceanswatch for a copy of their charter before I went any further. They really haven't been very forthcoming, it seems. On their web site, under "charter" they state: "Copies of our Trust documents are available on request by emailing chris@oceanswatch.org" I emailed Chris, and here are the emails sent and received as of today. It doesn't cost him anything to send copies of this stuff to me, does it? So now I'm asking what does he have to hide? Anybody here know?

I feel the NHC has a good track forecast right now, based on what I've seen in the forecast steering currents as mentioned this morning. This could change as this reaches T.S. or Hurricane status. I will continue to monitor that and put out a forecast if needed regarding any possible change. All interests in the Leeward Islands, Caribbean Islands, and Puerto Rico should monitor the progress of this system closely.

If you own a boat, then you know the amount of pride you feel when you take your lady out on the water. The only complaint you might have is how standard most boats look. They may have a different color scheme but for the most part, the decoration styles of most boats are the same. You would like your boat to look different from the rest, but airbrushing can be extremely costly. If you really want your boat to stand out and show off your personality than a boat wrap might be just for you. This can be a wrap that shows you are part of a sailing team or if you just want to make your boat different from anyone else's in the harbor. The choice is yours.

A boat wrap or marine wraps as it is officially called is not an airbrush job. Up until recently most boat lovers spiced up the look of their boat with an airbrush job. Airbrushing costs a lot of money and time. Your boat might have to go through some prep work before the airbrush even starts and the airbrushing itself can take some time. You could be missing valuable time out on the water. With boat wrapping you don't have to worry about any of that. The boat wrap goes over almost any hull with very little prep. There is no scraping or painting required. This is why boat wrapping is so much less expensive than say an airbrush or even a detail job. Most of the time with those projects you have to prep your boat. Your boat might have to be painted or scraped. This adds into the cost of the work. The design on the wrap will vary from owner to owner. This is your boat. You can make it as exciting and colorful as you want. The best part is because it is installed over your hull, you don't have to worry about mistakes being made like you do when your boat is being airbrushed or detailed. The boat wrap company will make sure everything is perfect before they even begin to install your images on your boat. Boat wraps are printed out before they are installed on your boat so if you see something you don't' like or it doesn't meet your vision, you can change it before its put on your boat. You can't do that with airbrush.

So whether you are an avid fisherman, a boat racer, or a boater hobbyist having a boat that is different from everyone else's is more of a reality than you thought possible with boat wraps.

I was just reading the thread on sailing yacht propellers and was wondering if anybody has ever used their propeller to generate electricity while under sail. Seems like it would be easy enough... just install a gear on the shaft and connect it to some form of small turbine.... I would think this could be a pretty efficient way to charge batteries, etc., while under sail but I've never heard anyone comment on it.

I'm looking to purchase my first sailboat and I am in need of some guidance. I was leaning towards a steel or aluminum hull but most do not have a swim step and walk through transom. It sounds kind of odd but the is a top criteria for me. Three reasons: it is easier to land big fish, it is easiers to board from a tender, and I have a dog who loves the water and if she jumps I need to get her back aboard somehow. Do you know of any steel hulled sloop or cutter rigs that have a walk through transom and a swim step?! I am looking at the 40'-45' range.

Have you purchased a boat lately? A jet ski, maybe? Whatever watercraft you may have purchased, as long as the craft is under two years old, you may be able to apply the lemon law if it is repeatedly experiencing some defects.

As long as the defect in your watercraft is covered by the manufacturer�s warranty, all you have to do is allow the manufacturer substantial opportunity to make the necessary repair to the defective boat. If after several attempts to remedy the problem in your craft you are still unable to find a solution to the problem, under the lemon law, you are given the right to demand an outright replacement with a new boat or a refund for the purchase you made.

Before filing a lawsuit, you have to be aware of the lemon law in your state. The laws that exist vary from state to state. Also, you have to make sure that you meet all the requirements before filing a case. It does not matter which part of the boat contains the defect; as long as it meets the criteria, you have a case. The defect must be covered by the manufacturer�s warranty; the manufacturer should be given the opportunity to fix the defect of the boat and each time the remedy is tried, it has to fail. Additionally, the vehicle has to have been purchased within the number of years allowed by the state. If these criteria are met, then you can consider demanding compensation, a full refund, or a replacement vehicle from the manufacturer.

If the manufacturer is unwilling to comply with the lemon law, it would be best to hire a lawyer to defend your case. Even if your situation does not qualify under the lemon laws, there are attorneys who are able to claim damages for the manufacturer�s defects.

When catching dinner, how concerned are cruisers and sailors about catching fish which carry the Ciguatera toxin? I only know what amounts to 'folklore'. In Australian waters many anglers avoid eating large fish which are known to dwell amid coral reefs. The parrot fish (beautiful fillets!!) is known to be particularly prone to Ciguatera. I understand that fish caught in deep water, or away from coral, do not carry Ciguatera. Is this correct?

Choose the Boat That is Right For You

What type of boat is best for my lifestyle?

Maybe you are an avid fisherman who spends endless summer days searching for that fish that will give you ultimate bragging rights, or want to spend summer afternoons slowly cruising with a group of friends on your pontoon, or possibly have a fascination for speed and water sports. Whatever your passion, there is a boat out there that is made specifically for your needs and desires. However it isn�t always easy to know exactly which boat you should choose. It is easy to be overwhelmed by the enormous variety of boat types and models. There are several different boat choices based on what they would be used for.

What will I use the boat for?

You should first decide what you anticipate using the boat for. There are boats for fishing, water sports, cruising, sailing, entertaining, or taking long trips. Some are designed for multiple purposes.

Once you know what you want to do with it, decide who you are going to be taking with you? You may not want a pontoon boat the fits 12 people if you are only going to be fishing with a buddy. You also don�t want to overload your boat because of safety. Think about whether you will be taking family and friends, and how many at a time.

Consider where you will be enjoying your boat; up and down the calm river, on a sheltered lake, or an open ocean with high waves and rough seas. If you will be taking trips you will want your boat to have a cabin.

Choosing the right engine for my boat:

Now consider the propulsion needed when deciding on an engine type. The horsepower and weight are very important factors in the performance of your boat. If the engine is not powerful enough for your boat, it will work harder than it should and lead to a great deal of maintenance and excess use of fuel. You need to consider the size and weight of your boat, including gear and passengers. There are six different propulsion types with varying factors to consider when choosing a system for your boat.

Outboard Motors (2 types)

Outboard motors are detachable and mounted on the stern of the boat, with horsepower ranging from 1HP to over 300HP. These engines can be used in all types of water. The 2 types of outboard motors are 2 stroke and 4 stroke.

2 Stroke: better acceleration, no need to change oil, better fuel efficiency, lower priced, weighs less, quieter

4 Stroke: lower emissions, excellent fuel economy, electronic ignition systems, good acceleration, oil added to engine not fuel

Diesel Inboard Engines

These engines range in size and horsepower, and rely on compression for power. They are designed for boats over 35ft because they produce torque and weigh more than gas engines.

No carbon monoxide in cabins or back, non-explosive fuel, low running cost, excellent torque, long life expectancy

Gas Inboard Engines

These engines are used for a variety of different sizes and types of boats, and range in horsepower from 90HP to 1000HP. It is located in the middle of the boat with the drive running through the bottom of the boat to the propeller. The rudder is separate for steering.

Simple drive system, quite, hidden, lower maintenance, low running costs

Jet Propulsion

These systems do not include a propeller, which make it safer for water sports. They are inboard engines that take in water which flows through a pump that is powered by an impeller. The high pressure caused by this, propels the boat forward. However, steering is only possible when power is being applied. Things can also be sucked into the water intake, and shouldn�t be used in shallow water.

Stern Drive

This is often called an Inboard/Outboard and consists of an engine and drive connected through the transom of the boat. The engine is inside and the propulsion is outside of the boat. This drive can be trimmed up or down. There are many different types of functions depending on what they will be used for. They can be used with one or two propellers, as well as two drives on one boat with one or two propellers.

There are different types of boats for a variety of activities and intended use. Below are examples of what boats are used for with lists of boat types best suited for that activity. You will find that there are several boats that are intended for more that one activity. For example, if you like fishing, water skiing, and plan to sleep on board; you can choose between a Stern Drive Cruiser and Cuddy Cabin.

Today, the most common sailboat is the sloop which features one mast and two sails, a normal mainsail and a foresail. This simple configuration is very efficient for sailing towards the wind. The mainsail is attached to the mast and the boom, which is a spar capable of swinging across the boat, depending on the direction of the wind. Depending on the size and design of the foresail it can be called a jib, genoa, or spinnaker; it is possible but not common for a sloop to carry two foresails from the one forestay at one time (wing on wing). The forestay is a line or cable running from near the top of the mast to a point near the bow. In Bermuda, where a rig design influenced by the Lateen rig appeared on boats and came to be known as the Bermuda rig, a large spinnaker was carried on a spinnaker boom when running down-wind. An example of a typical sloop can be seen on the Islander 36.

The one benefit of purchasing a used boat is that it will come cheaper than a new one, and is generally better equipped. Added to that, a used boat has a proven track record. On the downside, upgrading a used boat will eventually cost you money.

If you choose to purchase a used boat, there are many ways to go about it. Shopping can be done through classified advertisements in the newspapers, journals, magazines and on a plethora of websites relating to boats. Also, dealerships offer boats that have been accepted as trade-ins. The warranty offered on the used boat would be limited, and the boat will most likely have gone through some servicing to get it ready for sale. The dealer, being a third party with obvious overhead costs (for example, sales commissions), would put a higher price on the used boat than the owner of the boat would.

The prudent thing to do, upon finding a boat that suits your taste, is to call the U.S. Coast Guard and get the requisite information on that particular model. If a recall has been issued, then you should call the owner to find out if the boat has been serviced. If the answer is in the negative, you should find out if the recall period is still on.

After the necessary research, the boat would then have to be thoroughly inspected. The engine is the major concern in a used boat. A boat�s engine goes through a lot more wear and tear than a car�s, so you have to check the condition of the boat engine in detail. If you are a mechanical novice, a technician should check on the condition of the engine before you purchase the boat. This is particularly important if the boat has been used extensively in salt water, which has a greater corrosive effect than fresh water.

Getting a large boat from here to there may seem simple � just sail there! Ah, but this is often impossible given large land masses, which brings us to the issue of boat transports.

There is no question that the best way to get your boat from point A to point B is to sail it there. Some time this is not possible for the simple reason that there is no water between these two points. This is where boat transport comes into play. Of course, smaller boats have their own trailers and even many larger boats have them. It is the real large boats that require special trucking services. Many boat trucking companies are called yacht moving companies for this reason.

The boat trucking companies offer water to water service. They will pick up the boat from its original mooring and transfer it to any location in the world. The trucking companies are often called relocation companies for this reason. They provide everything that you need to safely relocate your boat from one location to the other. In many cases, there are even professional pilots available in the event that some part of the transfer must be on water.

Preparation for travel is one of the most important factors in the safe boat trucking of your boat. Despite all efforts to prevent damage, moving the boat over a highway is risky. If preparation is done properly, the risk is minimized. It is important to remove all protruding antennas or rigging. All loose items must be properly stowed and secured. It is very important to insure that all items of value and personal items are removed from the boat and transported separately. In almost every case, the boat trucking company will not assume responsibility for the loss of valuables or personal items.

There is some controversy about shrink wrapping the boat prior to transfer. Some boat trucking companies offer this service, and some owners have it done themselves prior to transport. Hunter Boats was started in 1969, with the first "famous" boat being the NATIONAL SQUIB, designed and finished by Oliver Lee, and moulded by the Essex Boat Company. The Squib has gone on to reach national status with more than 800 on the water. In 1970, a chap named Michael Poland requested that the builder design a "lid" for the Squib, to enable him to sail it across the English Channel. As Poland's other favourite past-time was hunting, the boat was named the HUNTER 19! probably not need to register it. Many types of boats (especially 10' and under) do not need
to be registered.

Who to register the boat with is another question. All counties have different rules n
regulations. Best way is to ask your state department of transportation or motor vehicle
division. Most states give a grace period of 30 days from the time you purchase to the time you
need to register it.

Most important document needed for the registration purpose is the sales receipt. Few
require a manufactures statement of origin, also known as MSO.

insurance which covers the event of damage caused by your boat to another person of his
property.

One should insure the boat for its market value. They should insure the value of the
boat, not what is paid for it. They should also increase the coverage to reflect the increasing
value of the boat. One can also insure the boat for an agreed upon replacement value. The
higher the agreed replacement value of your boat, the higher will be the cost of the insurance
policy.

Boat insurance should cover both physical damage to your boat as well as accident
liability.

Physical damage insurance is usually called hull insurance, although it generally
covers the whole boat. These insurance policies also repair the boat with a deduction for
depreciation.

The limit of liability is based on whether or not the insured is legally required
to raise, remove or destroy the boat. Theft of the boat will not be covered by the policy if
the boat is off the residence premises. Liability may also provide coverage for legal
representation should it become essential from any incidents involving your boat.

With proper registration and well insured boat, one can happily boat without anything
to worry about and rejoice the moments..

Tony Herrick from Cruising Connections asked whether this product was worth considering for the boating industry. The product is made in S Africa and is approved by the SA Burough of Standards and in use by the local Military amongst many other govt. and semi-govt. organizations and private groups. The retail cost for the water treatment would be in the region of about US$20 per 1,000 liters of water. The best for me is that this treatment is odourless and tasteless (Chlorine and bleach free). Not wishing to pre-empt the findings of the investigation into the latest tragedy in the ARC rally. But taking a good hard look at preventing injuries from being hit specifically by booms:-

During racing, the controlled gybe manoeuver may be performed many times without the use of a boom preventer - this is understandable. However, when in a cruising mode and when setting a course for a distant destination, is there a good reason for not using a boom preventer, so that if an unplanned gybe occurs - possible injury is averted ????

Very well equipped 51 foot sailboat leaving Florida January 15th for extended cruising in the Caribbean. Plan to spend a month in the Bahamas, a month in the Virgin Islands and two months in the Windward and Leeward Islands. I am looking for one or two people to join me and assist in running the boat. Blue water experience preferred but not required. Would require a minimum of one month commitment but would prefer persons who are available for the full four months. I will pay all boat expenses and provision the boat. You must arrange and pay for your transportation to and from the boat and your expenses on land.
